The North Houston District split the funding for the project roughly 50/50 with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Local Parks Grant Program. The comprehensive upgrade incorporates new fitness and play areas as well as additional lighting, two new youth soccer fields, and environmental enhancements.
“Thomas R. Wussow Park is our signature neighborhood park, serving a densely populated area,” said North Houston District President Greg Simpson. “We are proud to refresh this 22-year-old facility to better serve the local community, and to continue to honor the legacy of Tom Wussow.”

Enjoy Evenings at the Park with Upgraded Lighting
After incorporating public feedback on the District’s 2023 Parks Master Plan, construction included plans to address concerns about lighting and safety at Wussow Park, especially along pathways and near the playgrounds.
In response to public input, 17 pedestrian solar lights were installed along the trail at the southern edge of the park, along with three new field lights, one of which illuminates the brand new playground pod. The three existing field lights were also converted to high-efficiency LED lights, which produce brighter light over a longer distance than non-LED bulbs.
“Along with the added lighting helping with safety and security at the park, it will also increase usability in the winter with the sun setting early,” explained Robert Fiederlein, Vice President of Planning and Infrastructure.

Soccer Fields, Playground & Adult Fitness Pads Open for Use
Two new youth soccer fields–one for children under age 8 and one for under 12—include field lighting, picnic tables, and additional spectator seating. The new fields join the Thomas R. Wussow Park Mini Pitch, funded in conjunction with the Houston Dynamo/Dash and the United States Soccer Foundation, just in time for the heightened soccer enthusiasm during Houston’s hosting of the 2026 World Cup.
In place of the previous sand volleyball court, an adult workout station with exercise equipment offers different ways to move your body and work up a sweat. The station has eight pieces of equipment that range from strength training and balance machines to cardio opportunities. A sunshade covers the fitness area so that it can be used even on hot days.
The new playground pod features a large, net-like climbing structure made of synthetic rope that can be enjoyed by children of all ages. It joins other existing playground pods that are geared towards age-specific play, and has a dedicated field light stationed nearby to keep the area well-lit.
New Signage & Landscaping
New, modern monument signage has been installed in the park and is designed to align with gateway monument signage installed across the District, reinforcing a cohesive aesthetic across the North Houston area.
A pollinator garden and native grass plantings are on the park’s western and southern ends, supporting butterflies, bees, and other insects and birds. Accompanying signage educates visitors on the crucial environmental role of pollinators.
