Field Services Boost Curb Appeal, Clean Streets in North Houston

Clean & Green: Field Services Team Makes the District a Place People & Businesses Want to Be

The North Houston District was originally formed to leverage public and private partnerships to enhance the area in ways that attract businesses, residents, and investors to the region. Over the years, the District has helped secure millions of dollars in funding for public projects. We recently spoke with Asdrubal “Dru” Gutierrez, Director of the District’s Field Services Department, about how his team helps bring the organization’s mission to life.

“The number one goal for my department is that when you come into the District—whether it’s off the highway or another road—it should look and feel clean. It should look well-maintained. It should look like someone’s paying attention and caring for the area,” said Gutierrez.

Gutierrez and his team oversee everything from park maintenance and mowing medians to street sweeping, curb painting, litter removal, graffiti abatement, and more. Through strong relationships with contractors and partners, the Field Services Department monitors all four quadrants of the District, responding to issues and coordinating with city and county departments when needed.

“There is never a dull moment,” Gutierrez added. “We’ve seen everything—from a vehicle hitting a 20-year-old oak tree, to an abandoned golf cart in the park, to a delivery truck that spilled 52 crates of milk on the road. We get it cleaned up and out of the way so people can resume their day.”

Curbs Get a Refresh

Now in its fifth year, the District’s curb painting and repair program continues to make a visible difference. In 2024 alone, the Field Services team repaired 180 linear feet and painted 14,605 linear feet of curbs across the area. In 2025, more than 24,000 linear feet will be painted.

This work complements the District’s recent sidewalk expansion and pedestrian improvement projects along several key corridors:

    • Kuykendahl Road– from Stonefield Drive to Interstate 45
    • Rankin Drive– from Rankin Circle West to Spears Gears
    • Northchase Drive– from North Sam Houston Parkway to Greens Road
    • West Hardy Road– from North Sam Houston Parkway to Goodnight Drive
    • Imperial Valley Drive– from Rankin Road to Aldine Bender Road
    • Airline Drive– from Aldine Bender Road to West Road

“We’re going section by section to show some love to the curbs,” said Gutierrez. “When you see a fresh coat of paint along a corridor with freshly cut grass—it makes a great impression. Property owners notice, and so do visitors.”

Street Sweeping Keeps Roadways Clear

Street sweeping is another key part of the District’s beautification efforts, removing debris from major thoroughfares. In 2024, the Field Services team completed 156 miles of sweeping, with 13 miles swept monthly and special focus on high-traffic intersections.

Focus areas include:

    • Interstate 45 at West Road
    • Interstate 45 at Rankin Road
    • Beltway 8 at Greenspoint Drive
    • Beltway 8 at Imperial Valley Drive
    • Beltway 8 at Veterans Memorial Drive
    • Greenspoint Drive from Beltway 8 to Greens Drive

Making a Good Impression on Event-Goers

The Field Services department also helps maintain the District’s premier extreme sports facilities. Ahead of the Lone Star Nationals BMX competition, the team prepares the 3,500-seat North Houston Bike Park by trimming trees, upgrading landscaping, updating signage, and performing facility touch-ups.

Their work ensures the park is competition-ready, helping to welcome thousands of international visitors and driving a strong economic impact for local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.

The North Houston Bike Park is one of several parks developed by the N. Houston Development Corp. and maintained by the District’s Field Services team—another example of partnership and long-term investment in the area’s vitality.
