In honor of the anniversary of the US Marine Corps (November 10) and Veterans’ Day (November 11), the North Houston District is excited to announce VP of Public Safety, Tracy Harrison’s, appointment to the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Veterans Advisory Board.
Multiple veterans are employed by, or sit on the board of, the District, and we look forward to continuing our support of the veteran community.
The North Houston District is thrilled to announce that Tracy Harrison, our Vice President of Public Safety, has been appointed to the Veterans Advisory Committee of the ICMA.
Founded in 1914, the ICMA serves more than 13,000 city, town, and county leaders through advocacy, research, and professional development. Its Veterans Advisory Committee plays a key role in guiding ICMA’s efforts to assist service members as they transition to civilian life. A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, Harrison brings firsthand insight to this role.
From Military Service to District Leadership
As a former Marine officer whose specialized skill sets—ranging from financial management to combat weapons instructor—did not easily translate to a specific industry or civilian job position, Harrison knows the challenges of choosing a path after transitioning out of the military. She quickly discovered, however, that her core skills, like teamwork, accountability, dependability, and adaptability, were an excellent match for public service.
Tracy Harrison joined ICMA in 2023 and was recently selected for the advisory committee through a national application process. Composed of volunteers from across the United States, the committee meets throughout the year to share insights and develop strategies that benefit both veterans and local government agencies.
In her new role, she anticipates furthering the committee’s goal of helping veterans integrate into the public service workforce. “There are still ways one can serve the public and have an impact. And one way is through city and county government positions,” she says.
A New Chapter of Service
In her advisory role with ICMA, Harrison hopes to do more than simply offer guidance—she aims to open doors. ICMA’s veteran support initiatives include internship placements and mentorship programs that help bridge the gap between military service and local government employment.
“I look forward to using my experience in transitioning from military service into public service to help veterans understand the roles and benefits available working in government,” she says. “Public service work is not something I thought of at first, so I want to be able to make sure military veterans transitioning are aware of the opportunities.”
“I look forward to using my experience in transitioning from military service into public service to help veterans understand the roles and benefits available working in government.”
The North Houston District congratulates Tracy on this well-deserved appointment and thanks her for continuing to champion veteran leadership at the local level. Her dedication to ICMA’s efforts will help connect other veterans to roles working for local governments nationwide. Great work, Tracy!
