Project Overview
North Houston Bike Park was developed on a 20-acre site on Kuykendahl Road at Interstate 45. The project was inspired by feedback from BMX bike riders who expressed a strong desire for a local bike park after the opening of North Houston Skate Park. This project features competition bowls, a street-riding plaza, pump and dirt tracks, a USA BMX track, and more. The park also has several public art installations, including a bronze sculpture by Skateboarding Hall of Famer Steve Olsen.
Located adjacent to a major drainage system for Houston, the entire site was reimagined as a porous park that meshes sustainable hardware elements such as rain gardens, detention zones and bioswales with permeable pavement, gravel parking and planted areas threaded among the riding zones. The park is a pioneer of low impact development. 3.5-acres of 100% permeable parking lots, rain gardens along the promenade, and bike bowls to hold water in flood conditions, to keep the park usable and active during seasons of frequent storms.
