Enjoy Free Community Events at North Houston Parks This Summer
Mark your calendar for upcoming dates! 📆
There are plenty of ways that local families can enjoy parks and trails in the North Houston area this summer, including at the free community events hosted by the N. Houston Development Corp. (TIRZ 11). Don’t miss these fun-filled festivities at Dylan Park and North Houston Skate Park.
TIRZ 11, a North Houston District partner, regularly hosts community events at local public parks. With eight parks spanning 56 acres and over six miles of trails, North Houston offers plenty of space for outdoor activities and world-class facilities for extreme sports. These events include skateboarding and BMX competitions, a start-of-summer celebration, and a back-to-school event with free school supplies.
“The summer months and long sunny days are ideal for enjoying the well-maintained park facilities right here in the North Houston District,” explains Treena Dockery, North Houston District Parks & Recreation Manager. “We’re proud to team up with our community partners to support free recreational opportunities for North Houston families.”
Go Skate Day – June 21 at North Houston Skate Park
From ollies and grinds to impressive flip maneuvers, this popular event draws crowds of competitors for a tricks contest and social skating. Whether you are a novice or an expert, bring your deck and your A-game.
After the competition, take a break to check out local vendors and explore the North Houston Skate Park. After all, it is the largest skate park in North America, with 77,000 square feet of skate surface!
The park features a world-class, competition-scale bowl with a full pipe, a 12-foot vertical ramp, a 10-foot-deep bowl, banked walls, and speed hips – plus backyard-style pools & three flow bowls. A section designed to emulate the street-skating experience has ledges, rails, benches, banks, quarter pipes, and stair obstacles. The facility is designed for all skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
Opened in 2014, a recently refreshed pour-in-place surface enhanced parts of the skate park. North Houston Skate Park is owned and funded by TIRZ 11.
Splash into Summer – June 28 at Dylan Park
For a day of play in the sunshine, head to Splash into Summer. Yard games, water activities, food vendors, and contests will highlight the Field Day-inspired atmosphere. Join the crowd in the grassy area at Dylan Park, “a park without limits” built with inclusive features designed to engage children with special needs or physical disabilities.
Dylan Park’s unique features and playground equipment engage children who are sight-impaired, hearing-impaired, autistic, or who use a wheelchair. The playground just received a fresh pour-in-place surface, an industry-preferred solution that utilizes material made of rubber granules that is ideal for play areas because of its safety rating and shock-absorbing qualities.
Back to School Bash – Aug. 23 at Dylan Park
When classes roll around again, head to Dylan Park for the Back to School Bash. School-aged attendees at the event will receive free school supplies and other swag, including backpacks, notebooks, pencils, t-shirts, and more. All supplies and giveaways are generously provided by area businesses and community partners.
While at the event, attendees can explore the park itself, an oasis of beautiful landscaping, public art, walkways, and even a beautiful garden with plantings meant to attract butterflies. Visitors enter through metal butterfly gates and are welcomed by tactile mosaic sculptures that encourage people to touch the pieces and enjoy the shapes of birds, caterpillars, and butterflies incorporated into the mural. Throughout Dylan Park, many features include Braille for individuals who are blind or sight-impaired.
