Dovetailing with ongoing construction of the new Houston Police Department North Belt Substation, (partially funded by TIRZ 11) the City of Houston will begin renovations to Fire Station 74. TIRZ 11 will fund $2 million in upgrades and the City of Houston General Services Department will manage construction. The Houston City Council approved the plans in October, and the project is now in the design phase, with plans being finalized soon for the highly anticipated station revamp.
“Fire Station 74 needed prompt attention after having not received any upgrades since it was built. The aged station had subpar heating and cooling, an outdated kitchen and flooring, and no separate facilities to accommodate women firefighters at the station,” TIRZ 11 Executive Director Sally Bradford explained.
“The TIRZ has been pushing for this project for some time and has received support under Mayor Whitmire to move it forward. I am excited to see it completed before I retire. It’s such an important project, for me personally, to see to completion,” Bradford said.
A Longstanding Station
Located in the North Houston District’s Southeast quadrant at 460 Aldine Bender, Fire Station 74 serves several large apartment communities in the area, along with local businesses. The station was originally commissioned in 1983 and has not seen significant updates since.
Planned upgrades for the station include a new HVAC system, a new kitchen, and new firefighters’ quarters, among other interior renovations and upgrades to the facilities.
These station upgrades will provide better facilities for firefighters working to keep businesses and residents safe when fires happen in the North Houston District, Bradford shared.

Timeline & Temporary Relocation
Bradford explained that the firefighters will move to a temporary location while the work is being completed. The construction of the upgrades is expected to take a total of 8 months.
Plans for a ribbon-cutting and grand re-opening celebration will be set closer to completion of the renovation. (Check back for updates as the project progresses!)
Investing in First Responders in North Houston
TIRZ 11 provided funding to construct Fire Station 84 and the Houston Police Department’s North Belt Station, both located in the District’s northwest quadrant on Gears Road.
The Fire Station 74 project is part of a larger effort by the TIRZ and the North Houston District to invest in public safety and prioritize first responders. The Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Department are crucial resources for the North Houston community, and providing them with renovated facilities further enhances safety and security in the area.
