Public Art & Placemaking

Why Invest in Public Art for the North Houston District?

The Public Art & Placemaking Program offers a toolkit for the North Houston District to advance placemaking initiatives first envisioned in our 2030 Service Plan. It focuses on strategic investments in public art made equitably across the district’s four quadrants.

Public art has a proven, innate value and power to enhance places and people’s lives. Strategic, well-executed interventions with public art can advance the full range of management district objectives. The Program will use public art as a powerful tool to achieve core District management goals. It will harness the creativity and talents of artists, creative visionaries, and place-makers. It will be approached as an opportunity to build a cohesive community and trust, as well as strong relationships and partnerships.

Trail Art Turtle Murals

North Houston District partnered with UP Art Studio on Trail Art Turtle Murals in early 2023 as part of the District’s Public Art Program expansion. Hear from NHD President Greg Simpson and UP Art Studio Muralist Robin Munro about how they think the project will impact surrounding residents. The trail segment featured in this video is at Greens Road, adjacent to Thomas R. Wussow Park, and there’s more to see where the trail meets Imperial Valley Drive. #publicart #trailart #mural #bayouwildlife #turtlemural
