Nearly $1M in park improvements planned at Wussow Park in North Houston
North Houston District earns Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Grant.
The North Houston District received a $455,013 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant for the Wussow Park Renovation project, which focuses on improving area residents’ health and wellness and enhancing the natural aspects of the park. The projected project cost is $940,000, and the TPWD grant will cover nearly half.
“Wussow Park is our signature neighborhood park, serving a densely populated community,” said North Houston District President Greg Simpson. “We are thankful for this grant and excited about the renovations that will update this twenty-two-year-old facility, allowing it to better serve local families and children.”
Improvements include:
- Two youth soccer fields to accompany the mini pitch currently in progress, an accessible and shaded fitness area with multiple workout stations focused on adults of all ages and an expansion of the playground area for toddlers and children.
- There are three separate planting areas: a coastal prairie along the bayou trail, a pollinator garden, and plantings in an on-site drainage ravine to filter pollutants that might otherwise discharge to Greens Bayou. All of these will include interpretive signage.
- Additional and upgraded lighting to improve security will be added, including new walking paths, picnic areas, and park benches.
Plans for the revamp at Thomas R Wussow Park grew from a parks planning process the District conducted in 2022 and 2023, culminating with the Parks Master Plan. Wussow Park at 500 Greens Road is the District’s largest, oldest, and most heavily used park.
“Our two over-arching goals for this project are to help improve the health and wellness of the community and to give the residents a more authentic and enhanced natural experience,” said Robert Fiederlein, NHD Vice President of Planning and Infrastructure. “This grant makes that possible.”
